Magento 1 · Maintenance and migration
Your Magento 1 still sells. Let's keep it safe.
Adobe stopped updating Magento 1 in 2020. The problem isn't that your store works badly: it's that nobody updates it any more. I help you keep it secure or migrate it without starting from scratch.
01 — Warning signs
If any of these sounds familiar, it's time to act.
- Your hosting provider is asking you to upgrade the server and you're afraid the site will stop working.
- Nobody updates the store's security any more, yet customer data and payments go through it.
- The developer who looked after it is gone, or no longer wants to touch it.
- Payments, couriers or e-invoicing stopped working after a change.
- Someone proposed rebuilding everything on Magento 2, with a quote you didn't expect.
02 — The three options
There's no answer that fits everyone. There's the right one for your store.
Stay on Magento 1
We keep it secure and running with a monthly maintenance plan. Suitable if the store is stable and you don't want to invest in a migration right now.
from €100/month
Move to OpenMage or Maho
Two open-source projects that continue Magento 1: same foundation, but updated for today's servers and maintained by an active community. No licence fees.
Fixed price
Move to Magento 2
A new platform: theme and modules have to be rebuilt. It makes sense if you want to renew the whole store anyway, not just make it secure.
Fixed price
| Stay on Magento 1 | OpenMage or Maho | Magento 2 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | None | Moderate | High |
| Timeline | Immediate | Usually a few weeks | Usually a few months |
| Orders, customers, products | Stay where they are | Stay the same | Need to be transferred |
| Theme and modules | Unchanged | Almost always reusable | Need rebuilding |
| Long term | To be reassessed | Updated and maintained | Updated and maintained |
03 — How the migration works
Your store stays online. The work happens on a copy.
Full backup
A copy of the whole store and database, before touching anything.
Check
I go through modules and customisations one by one: you know in advance what needs adapting and what it costs.
Upgrade
All the work happens on a separate copy, never on the live store.
Testing
You try orders, payments, shipping and invoices before the switch.
Go live
At an agreed time, with the option to switch back at any moment.
04 — FAQ
The questions I get asked most.
Will the store go offline during the migration?
No. The work happens on a separate copy. The final switch is a short intervention, at a low-traffic time agreed with you.
Will I lose orders, customers or products?
No. When you move to OpenMage or Maho your data stays the same: the software is updated, not the content. And a full backup comes first.
Will my modules still work?
In most cases, yes. In the analysis I check them one by one and tell you in advance what needs adapting and what it costs.
What are OpenMage and Maho?
Two open-source projects created to continue Magento 1. They share the same foundation, but are updated for today's servers and maintained by an active community. There's no licence to pay.
How much does it cost?
Maintenance starts at €100 a month. For a migration you get a fixed price after the analysis, which starts at €250 and is deducted from the project.
What if something goes wrong after going live?
You can switch back to the previous version at any time. For 3 months I fix defects in the delivered work free of charge.
